Tips to Keep Your Canine Fit During National Pet Month

It is now National Pet Month, and for dog owners, this may mean a time to appreciate our four-legged friends by providing extra treats and cuddles.

But before you reach for the extra treats, did you know that 1 in 3 dogs are overweight?

While taking your dog for regular walks is great for socialising and keeping them active, there are other unique and fun activities to try that will help your dog maintain a healthy weight.

One activity is agility training. This type of training teaches your dog to move through an obstacle course and sharpens their coordination skills. In addition to outdoor exercise, there are indoor activities you can do for their daily exercise. Playing tug-of-war and running your pooch up and down the stairs are both examples of effective ways to keep them active in the house.

Not only do these exercises keep your dog healthy, but they can also help build trust and prevent destructive behaviours at home.

For more tips and ideas for both outdoor and indoor dog exercises, check out Sainsbury’s Bank visual guide to creative canine fitness.

Just remember, if you are unsure how much exercise your dog needs, consult a vet or qualified dog care specialist who can help keep your pup in shape for a healthy and full life.
